Agarwood, known in Korean as Chimhyang (침향), has long been treasured throughout Asia for its deep, refined aroma. Its Korean name refers to “fragrant wood that sinks in water,” a reference to the dense, resin-rich wood traditionally associated with high-quality agarwood.

Agarwood forms naturally when certain trees experience environmental stress or injury. As part of the tree’s natural response, aromatic resin gradually develops within the wood. Over many years, this process creates the rich and distinctive fragrance for which agarwood is known.

Each piece of agarwood can carry a slightly different scent depending on the tree species, growing environment, soil, age, and resin concentration. Its aroma may reveal different layers as it burns—from the first fragrance to the deeper heart notes and the soft scent that remains afterward.

Agarwood has a long cultural history throughout Asia. References to it appear in historical writings including the Samguk Sagi, Goryeosa, Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and traditional herbal texts. Because of its rarity and value, agarwood was historically enjoyed by royalty, scholars, spiritual practitioners, and religious communities.
